| Tips for Summer Pet Care |
As
humans, we look forward to the many joys of summer. However, these same things that may make us jubilant,
could be harmful to our pets.
Here
are some suggestions for summer pet care!
Each
summer we see many cases of heat
stroke.
When pets are outside, make sure they have plenty of water, shade & shelter.
If it’s too hot, bring the pet in, or not even let them outside.
Some
of the signs for heat stroke are:
Certain
injuries and health problems are seasonal.
Most are avoidable. Listed
below are some of the things to watch for in the summer.
While mowing yards and fields, be cautious of animals that enjoy chasing tires or to just tag along. Place them in a safe environment while doing these chores. We have numerous amputations and euthanasias from mowing injuries.
Hopefully
you don’t give your dog bones, but they will seek them out if not placed
in a covered receptacle for trash. Please
inform guests and all family members not to give bones to your pet, as we
have had surgeries to remove bones after back yard picnics.
You
will also want to watch dogs around the Bar-B-Que. pit.
Uncovered grills and drip pans are too inviting.
If
you have to temporarily tie-up your dog, an ample supply of shade and water are a must to
prevent heat stroke.
Sunscreen
or other medications may be needed on some dogs’ ears.
Fly
bites can be very uncomfortable as well as a potential infection site.
Hot spots and wounds need care to heal and not attract maggots.
When
playing with your pets outside make sure its not too hot, they could overheat.
Also keep your pet groomed, long hair and mats need to be clipped to keep them cool.
Never leave your pet inside a car. The car's temperature can reach above 120 degrees. If your pet can't get out when you get out of the car, your pet needs to stay at home.
If you will be traveling with your pet, we strongly recommend keeping him/her on a leash at all times to avoid accidents
