Salmonella in Raw Food Diets |
![]() |
There are many concerns about the BARF (Bones and Raw Food) diets. Along with possible health complications with the pet, the risk for bacterial infection from the raw food is also a major concern. Evidence has been provided proving that dogs fed a BARF diet are more likely to shed Salmonella. Just look at the statistics below:
10 dogs were fed a quality commercial food. Regular stool checks came up negative for Salmonella for all 10 dogs.
10 dogs were fed a BARF diet. Stool checks came up positive for Salmonella for 8 out of these 10 dogs.
This poses a particular concern to families with small children and those with aged or immune compromised people in the household.
At Greens Fork Animal Hospital, we recommend feeding a quality commercial diet such as Hill's Science Diet or Iams.
