Bread Dough is Not For Dogs

While fresh baked bread may be a special treat for most, dogs may not wait for the baking process and will ingest raw bread dough.  Not only is this a concern for the cook, it can be toxic to the dog.  A recent report from the ASPCA animal poison control center states that dogs consuming raw bread dough may experience what is called ethanol toxicosis.  During the process of rising, which is enhanced at body temperature, yeast produces ethanol.  The ethanol is rapidly absorbed from the stomach, leading to the signs of behavior changes, vocalization, depression, and urinary incontinence. Cardiac arrest or even death can follow.  When the bread dough expands, the pets stomach is stretched and obstruction may occur.

If you suspect your pet has ingested raw bread dough, get him/her into your vet as soon as possible.
